I am a movie junkie, it’s something I live with every day. It’s an addition. in the end though, we all love being able to escape our boring (or stressful) lives. Movies have always been my happy place, even as a child. I was bullied due to my size and my views on the world – movies didn’t judge me.
I’ve been working on this list for a week+ (13 days). No joke. Listing all of my favorites would take me hours & hours to do. So I tried to make this list as short as possible – and I tried to list lesser known films in hopes it’s something you may want to find. I know how hard it is to find a great film through asking for suggestions though – most of the time it’s just people saying popular films & films I have no interest in. Sorry, I’m not a fan of Harry Potter.
A lot of people know my love for all things horror, that’s the kind of film I grew up watching, but these films are from a few different genres. Also, these films are in no real order – just whatever order my computer put the pictures in. ^_^ I, on purpose, do not describe the films because I don’t want to ruin the films if you want to watch them. I hate when people ruin films for me.
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) – IMDB
I love sci-fi films from this time period. They are…incredible. I honestly just got into these films over the past few years. I think as with everything else in life our tastes for things change as we get older – when I was younger I hated these films. And yes, there’s a cat in the film!
A Clockwork Orange (1971) – IMDB
It’s no secret that I LOVE this book, and well I have an odd obsession with Malcolm McDowell. The first cosplay I put a lot of work into over the past few years is of Alex. I love everything about this film – and well Stanley Kurbrick is a god.
American Psycho (2000) – IMDB
Another film based on a book – which seems to be a fact not many people know. Before Christian Bale was Batman he was a bat shit crazy psychopath. To this date, this is my second favorite Christian Bale performance – my number 1 is on this list.
Carrie (1976) – IMDB
One of my childhood favorites! Okay, so it wasn’t released in my childhood but I remember watching it while I was younger. It’s not the first horror film I remember watching, but damn close to it. This film, as well as the book, gave those of us who were bullied someone to connect to – in an odd way. How many of us who were bullied would like to do what Carrie could do – damn near all of us!
Cat People (1942) – IMDB
One of the earliest films on my list. Also, a film that tells a story like this has to be on my list.
The Crow (1994) – IMDB
I honestly didn’t see this movie until I was well into my 20’s. I know, I’m late to some great things. I loved this film from the first time I watched it.
Eraserhead (1977) – IMDB
It took me so long to find a copy of this film, seriously I search out films. I was beyond excited when I finally found a copy to call my own. I’m in love with the filming style (hello, it’s David Lynch), costuming…just everything.
The Evil Dead (1981) – IMDB
Evil Dead II (1987) – IMDB
Army Of Darkness (1992) – IMDB
My cat is named Ash. Need I say more? Also, Bruce Campbell is AMAZING. I mean, I would put all of his films on this list…but that would just be silly.
The Detective (1968) – IMDB
Sinatra made a lot of films (as well as a lot of great music), but this has to be my favorite. I’ll take Sinatra the detective any day!
Friday The 13th films – Wikipedia
It’s no secret that Jason is my favorite killer. I know the films get so bad, but I can’t help it. I think it all goes back to Friday the 13th being the first horror film I remember seeing.
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966) – IMDB
I credit my grandma for this film being one of my favorites. Anytime it was on TV we had to watch it. It’s a film I actually remember watching with my brothers and no one fighting. haha. It’s not a horror film, it’s a straight up comedy.
Goodfellas (1990) – IMDB
I can recite SO many lines from this film. There was a point in time when I watched it…A LOT. Even though I watched it to the point where some people would never want to see it again, I still watch it. I love a good mob story, and with a director & amazing actors – that just makes it even better.
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988) – IMDB
I love chainsaw movies! And cults are interesting! Add the two during the 1980’s in Hollywood and you have this films. Oh yeah, and ladies of the night.
Heavy Metal (1981) – IMDB
I think it may surprise some people to know how much I really enjoy this film.
Hellraiser Films – Wikipedia
Pinhead, it’s all about him. Clive Barker knew what he was doing when he first created Pinhead. (You should check out his books!)
Hook (1991) – IMDB
This is a childhood favorite I will never out grow..because I’ll never grow up.
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009) – IMDB
The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011) – IMDB
The Human Centipede III (Final Sequence) (2015) – IMDB
Yes, I am a fan of these films and I’m not afraid to admit it. I just wish I knew someone who would watch them with me.
Insidious (2010) – IMDB
Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) – IMDB
Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) – IMDB
Insidious: The Last Key (2018) – IMDB
Two people: Patrick Wilson & Lin Shaye. I’ve loved them both in their own films and them together = amazing. Once I got hooked with the first film, I had dive into it head first. I miss finding films like that in general – films that sucked you in.
Antichrist (2009) – IMDB
Now I will say this, if you cannot handle scenes of gore – this film is not for you. It’s not horror gore though, and as I said before I don’t want to give a lot away. Well, if you can’t handle body mutilation, please do not watch this film. I have become a fan of Lars von Trier, he has such an eye for scenes you will never forget – for the good and bad. Again, this is a film with a lot of adult content.
The Money Pit (1986) – IMDB
This has to be my favorite Tom Hanks movies. As most of my films on this list, it has a tie to my childhood. I always watched this film with my mom.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) – IMDB
I’m sure everyone has their favorite holiday film that they have to watch every year, this is mine. I grew up watching it and still watch it the week of Christmas.
Night of the Living Dead (1968) – IMDB
When Romero passed away, all of us who love zombie films felt like our favorite uncle died. I credit him and this film for my love of zombies – well for my love of the classic zombie.
A Nightmare On Elm Street films – Wikipedia
There’s just something about Robert Englund that makes the character of Freddy really come to life.
Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013) – IMDB
Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013) – IMDB
Another film by Lars von Trier – well two if you break it up. I didn’t break it up, I watched it all at once. This film has strong adult content, just a warning.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – IMDB
Who hasn’t seen this?!
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) – IMDB
I came across this film when movie rental places were still a thing. It was one of those films I would pick up at random to get an awesome deal on the movies I would spend the weekend watching. This is a beautiful film – the costumes are just complete beauty. The story is another reason to watch this film.
The Perfect Host (2010) – IMDB
I’m sure most of you know David Hyde Pierce from the TV show Frasier. He places a character far from what you’re used to in that show – and it works so well.
Popcorn (1991) – IMDB
Another film I had to search out before I was able to find my own copy. What can I say, I’m a sucker for these kind of films.
Raising Arizona (1987) – IMDB
I remembered bits of pieces of this film from childhood when I watched it as a teenager. It’s no secret that I enjoy Nic Cage movies – even the bad ones.
Rebel Without a Cause (1955) – IMDB
I LOVE this film – as many films of the 50’s. James Dean was one of kind.
Scanners (1981) – IMDB
David Cronenberg has made many amazing films, I have to say this one if my favorite. The explosion scene is one to remember for sure.
Silkwood (1983) – IMDB
This seems to be a film that’s lesser known. I didn’t know about it until I was talking about one film I loved and my aunt suggested I find this film.
Somewhere in Time (1980) – IMDB
I love Christopher Reeve. This is one of maybe three “romance” films I like.
Stigmata (1999) – IMDB
This film had my attention from the first scene.
Superman (1978) – IMDB
These Superman films with Christopher Reeve are the only Superman films I’ve ever seen.
Tank Girl (1995) – IMDB
Lori Petty perfectly brings Tank Girl alive. Tank Girl is the first cosplay I ever did and this film holds a special place in my heart. Also, Malcolm McDowell.
The Order (2003) – IMDB
This is my favorite Health Ledger film.
The Machinist (2004) – IMDB
Christian Bale is mesmerizing in this film.
The Three Faces of Eve (1957) – IMDB
I first remember watching this film in school, but it was only a couple clips. So I found the film on my own to watch the whole thing. Well worth it.
The Fog (1980) – IMDB
So, the remake of this I’ve never seen. I just enjoy the original version so much that I don’t want to ruin it.
The Stuff (1985) – IMDB
Larry Cohen has written so much great films. I know this one is just so far out there that it’s just funny to watch.
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) – IMDB
Bette Davis & Joan Crawford two stars of golden Hollywood.
X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963) – IMDB
This is one of those sci-fi films I turned out loving when I was in the phase of finding more random movies.
I am really digging your movie list! I love horror movies.
The only ones that made me give you side-eye were The Human Centipede films. 😉 I’ve watched them, I won’t lie, but they grossed me out. I wouldn’t call them favorites. What do you like so much about them?
Have you considered reviewing movies? It might be fun.
